Board planning
The calculator first finds how many rows fit across the deck using actual board width plus the selected gap. It allows for no gap after the final row. Rows are multiplied by the board run length to get the total linear requirement, then divided by stock-board length. Both stock quantity and waste are rounded upward.
This linear approach works well for early planning but does not optimize cutting patterns, joints, picture-frame borders, or offcuts.
Product dimensions
Common wood decking is sold under nominal labels such as 5/4×6 or 2×6, often in 8, 10, 12, 16, and 20-foot lengths. Composite and PVC products use manufacturer-specific profiles and lengths. Availability varies by market, species, color, and supplier.

Measure accurately
A board sold as “2×6” is a nominal size; a finished wood board is commonly around 1.5 inches thick by 5.5 inches wide. The smaller actual width determines coverage, so using the nominal six-inch width can underestimate the rows required.
Installation spacing
Common planning values range from 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Wood movement depends on moisture at installation and climate; manufactured decking can require different side and end gaps. Always follow current manufacturer instructions and account for drainage and ventilation.
Framing quantity
Twelve and sixteen inches on center are common planning selections; 24 inches may be permitted only in specific systems. Board direction, decking stiffness, loads, joist species, spans, and local rules affect the required spacing. This tool counts joist lines but does not determine structural suitability.
Purchase allowance
Ten percent is a practical starting point for a straightforward rectangular deck. Five percent may be enough for highly efficient layouts with well-matched stock lengths. Diagonal patterns, many joints, defects, selective color matching, stairs, or picture framing can justify 15–20% or a project-specific takeoff.
Material comparison
Pressure-treated lumber often has a lower initial material price and can be cut with familiar woodworking tools, but it needs ongoing finishing and maintenance. Composite decking generally costs more upfront and requires system-specific fasteners and spacing, while offering consistent appearance and lower routine maintenance.
Transparent totals
Costs are calculated only for prices you enter: final board quantity times price per board, estimated joist pieces times price per piece, and fastener boxes times price per box. Missing prices remain clearly marked and are excluded from the known subtotal. Labor, tax, delivery, permits, tools, finishes, railings, beams, posts, and footings are not included.
